Civil War Union Commodore A. H. Foote CDV In Uniform . c. 1860 Civil War Period, Carte de Visite Photograph of United States Navy Union Commodore Andrew Hull Foote, Very Fine.. This CDV Photograph is of Commodore Andrew Hull Foote (1806 - 1863), was born in New Haven, CT, who joined the US Navy at the age of sixteen and spent most of his life in its service. This CDV measures 4 x 2 5/8” with slightly worn rounded corners in an impressive pose in his full Naval uniform and cradling his Presentation Sword against his left elbow. Paper label on the blank reverse, with both pencil and ink identifications. Commodore Foote was given command in 1861 of Naval defenses on the upper Mississippi. He was wounded in 1862 during the attack on Fort Donelson, then was promoted to Rear Admiral and moved to Washington,DC. He found having a desk job oppressive and managed to get assigned to the command of the South Atlantic Blockade Squadron, yet died before taking up his new command.
